Significance

The Battle of Münchengrätz, fought on 28 June 1866, resulted in a Prussian victory over the Austrian Empire. A Prussian force of roughly 14,000 engaged an Austrian force of approximately 20,000 under Eduard Clam-Gallas, inflicting around 3,000 Austrian casualties. The engagement was part of the rapid Prussian advance into Bohemia during the opening phase of the Austro-Prussian War, with forces under Prince Friedrich Karl and Karl Eberhard Herwarth von Bittenfeld pressing the Austrian army back. The defeat at Münchengrätz contributed to the deteriorating Austrian position in Bohemia, compounding pressure on Clam-Gallas's corps ahead of the larger and decisive engagements that would follow in the campaign.
