Battle of Mulhouse

Overview

The Battle of Mulhouse, also called the Battle of Alsace, began on 7 August 1914 and was the opening attack of the First World War by the French Army against the German Empire. The battle was a French attempt to recover Alsace, which France had ceded to Germany after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871. The French occupied Mulhouse on 8 August and were then forced out by German counter-attacks on 10 August.

Significance

The Battle of Mulhouse, also called the Battle of Alsace, opened on 7 August 1914 as the first offensive action launched by the French Army against Germany in World War I. Its objective was the recovery of Alsace, a province France had ceded to Germany following the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871, making the operation as much a matter of national redemption as of military strategy. French forces entered Mulhouse on 8 August, but German counter-attacks drove them out by 10 August, ending the occupation after only two days. Despite a numerical advantage of roughly 45,000 French troops against approximately 30,000 German defenders, the French effort failed to hold the city. The battle established early that recovering lost territory in Alsace would not be swift, and the failed assault contributed to broader French reassessments of offensive operations in the opening weeks of the war. French casualties of around 2,500 against German losses of approximately 3,000 reflected the cost of an advance that yielded no lasting gain.
