Battle of Monastir

Overview

The Battle of Monastir took place near the town of Bitola, North Macedonia during the First Balkan War, between Serbian and Ottoman forces from 16 to 19 November 1912. It resulted in a Serbian victory after heavy fighting north of the city, the routed Turks fled abandoning their guns.

Significance

The Battle of Monastir, fought north of Bitola in November 1912, resulted in a Serbian victory that drove Ottoman forces from the city. The Ottoman rout was decisive enough that retreating troops abandoned their artillery, a mark of the collapse in unit cohesion. With a Serbian force of over 108,000 against an Ottoman force of roughly 38,000, the engagement ended in Ottoman casualties of around 3,000 against Serbian losses of approximately 2,121. The capture of Monastir represented a significant territorial gain for Serbia during the First Balkan War, extending Serbian control deeper into Macedonia and further eroding Ottoman holdings in the Balkans at a moment when the empire was already under pressure across multiple fronts from the allied Balkan states.
