The first Battle of Mantinea was fought in 418 BC during the Peloponnesian War, pitting Sparta and its Peloponnesian allies against a coalition of Argos, Athens, Mantinea, and several other states. Sparta secured a victory, inflicting recorded casualties of 1,300 on the Argive side. The engagement brought opposing forces of roughly comparable size into direct confrontation, with Spartan forces numbering around 9,200 against an allied force of approximately 9,300. The battle's commanders included the Spartan king Agis II on one side, and Laches and Nicostratus leading Argive forces on the other.
