Significance

The Battle of Maniaki brought Greek forces under Papaflessas and Pieros Voidis into direct confrontation with the Egyptian expeditionary army of Ibrahim Pasha during a critical phase of the Greek War of Independence. The disparity in force sizes was severe — Egyptian forces numbered roughly 6,000 against a Greek complement of 1,000 to 1,500 — and Greek casualties reached as high as 1,000, indicating near-total attrition of the defending force. Ibrahim Pasha's Egyptian intervention had been invited by the Ottomans to suppress the Greek revolt and represented a substantial escalation in the military resources arrayed against the nascent Greek state.
