Significance

The Battle of Luzzara, fought in Lombardy on 15 August 1702, was a major engagement of the War of the Spanish Succession between an Imperial force under Prince Eugene and a combined French and Savoyard army under the duc de Vendôme. The French and allied force fielded between 30,000 and 35,000 troops against an Imperial army of approximately 26,000. Casualties were substantial on both sides — roughly 2,000–2,700 for the Holy Roman Empire and 3,500–4,000 for France — indicating the intensity of the fighting even without a recorded decisive outcome. The engagement was one of the significant contests for control of northern Italy, a theater in which the Maritime Powers and the Habsburgs sought to contest French and Bourbon dominance following the accession of Philip V to the Spanish throne. The presence of Philip V himself among the French commanders gave the battle a symbolic dimension within the broader dynastic conflict at the heart of the war.
