Battle of Carpi

Significance

The Battle of Carpi, fought on 9 July 1701, was the first engagement of the War of the Spanish Succession between French and Habsburg forces, pitting Prince Eugene of Savoy commanding 17,000 Habsburg troops against Nicolas Catinat's French force of approximately 11,400 men. The encounter was characterized in contemporary accounts as a minor skirmish rather than a pitched battle. Its most consequential result was political rather than operational: Catinat's decision to withdraw rather than press the engagement drew the displeasure of his own troops, and he was subsequently relieved of command. The change in French leadership that Carpi precipitated would have downstream effects on how France prosecuted the opening campaign of the war in the Italian theater, making the engagement notable less for any ground it decided than for the command crisis it triggered on the French side.
