Significance

The Battle of Königgrätz was the decisive engagement of the Austro-Prussian War, resulting in a Prussian victory over the Austrian Empire that effectively settled the conflict. Fought near the Bohemian city of Hradec Králové and the village of Sadová, it was the single largest battle of the entire war, with Prussia fielding roughly 220,000 troops against an Austrian force of between 206,000 and 215,000. Austrian casualties of approximately 31,000 dwarfed the Prussian loss of around 9,172, a disparity that reflected the scale of the Austrian defeat. The battle also held the distinction of being the largest engagement fought anywhere in the world since the Battle of Leipzig in 1813, underscoring its magnitude within nineteenth-century European military history. By defeating Austria decisively in a single major engagement, Prussia ended the war on terms favorable to its ambitions, cementing its dominant position among the German states.
