Significance

The Battle of Kissingen was a Prussian victory over Bavarian forces during the campaign of the Main, one of the secondary theaters of the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. While the principal Prussian effort was directed against Austria in Bohemia, operations along the Main targeted the German states allied with Vienna. The engagement at Kissingen, fought in and around the Bavarian town of that name, pitted roughly 18,000 Prussians against 15,000 Bavarians, with both sides sustaining notable casualties. A Prussian success here extended pressure on Bavaria and contributed to the broader isolation of Austria's German allies, accelerating the political collapse of the anti-Prussian coalition in the war's final weeks.
