Significance

The Battle of Kidal in March 2012 was part of the broader Tuareg-led insurgency in northern Mali that sought to establish the independent state of Azawad. Azawadi forces under Assalat Ag Habi and Iyad Ag Ghaly engaged a Malian government garrison of approximately 500 troops, inflicting around 100 casualties. The engagement was one of several coordinated strikes against Malian army positions in the north that collectively undermined government control of the region.
