Battle of Goumakoura

Overview

On 8 February 2012, rebel forces from the separatist National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) attacked a military outpost in Tinzaouaten located near the Algeria–Mali border. The battle led to the capture of the commune by MNLA rebels. A Malian government statement was released the following day declaring a "strategic retreat" from its base in Tinzaouaten. A Malian soldier was killed. Ten were captured and 37 defected and were retrieved by Algerian authorities.

Significance

The attack on the Malian army camp at Goumakoura occurred during the early phase of the Tuareg rebellion of 2012, in which the MNLA mounted a series of offensive operations against government military positions in northern Mali. The Malian army's repulsion of the assault represented one instance where government forces held their ground against the insurgency, though the broader rebellion continued to erode state control across the region during this period.
