Battle of Gao

Significance

The Battle of Gao, fought between the MNLA and the Islamist coalition of MOJWA and Ansar Dine, resulted in the expulsion of the secular nationalist movement from the major population centers it had seized during the Azawad secession. By June 28, Gao, Timbuktu, and Kidal — the three largest cities in the contested region — had passed from MNLA control to Ansar Dine and its Islamist allies. The battle marked a decisive internal fracture within the anti-Bamako coalition: the MNLA, which sought an independent secular Azawad, was effectively displaced by Islamist factions with a different governing agenda. This shift fundamentally altered the character of the conflict, transforming what had begun partly as a Tuareg separatist insurgency into a jihadist-dominated occupation of northern Mali, and set the conditions that would later prompt international military intervention.
