Battle of Kay

The Battle of Kay, also referred to as the Battle of Sulechów, Battle of Züllichau, or Battle of Paltzig, was an engagement fought on 23 July 1759 during the Seven Years' War. It occurred near Kay (Kije) in the Neumark, now part of Poland.

Significance

The Battle of Kay, fought on 23 July 1759 near Kay (Kije) in the Neumark, was an engagement between a Russian force of 40,000–41,000 under Pyotr Saltykov and a Prussian force of 26,000–28,000 under Carl Heinrich von Wedel, with Moritz Franz Kasimir von Wobersnow and Heinrich von Manteuffel also commanding on the Prussian side. Prussian casualties of 7,000–8,300 against Russian losses of 4,700–5,000 indicate a clear Russian tactical advantage in the engagement. Fought during the Seven Years' War, the battle took place in the Neumark region and represented a significant check on Prussian forces operating against Russia in the eastern theater of the war. The disparity in casualties and force sizes — Russia engaging with a substantially larger army — reflects the growing pressure the Russian Empire was able to apply to Prussia during this phase of the conflict.
