Battle of Jičín

Overview

The Battle of Gitschin or Jičín took place during the Austro-Prussian War on 29 June 1866, ending with a Prussian victory over the Austrian forces. There is a memorial there today at Jičín in the Czech Republic.

Significance

The Battle of Jičín on 29 June 1866 resulted in a Prussian victory over a substantially larger Austrian and Saxon force. Prussian commanders Werder and Tümpling defeated a combined force under Clam-Gallas and Crown Prince Albert of Saxony that outnumbered them by more than two to one, with Austrian and Saxon casualties running to 4,704 against Prussian losses of 1,553. The engagement was part of the opening Prussian offensive into Bohemia during the Austro-Prussian War, contributing to the rapid sequence of defeats that broke Austrian resistance in the theater within weeks. A memorial at Jičín in the Czech Republic marks the site today.
