Battle of Irún

Overview

The Battle of Irún was the critical battle of the Campaign of Gipuzkoa prior to the War in the North, during the Spanish Civil War. The Nationalist Army, under Alfonso Beorlegui, captured the city of Irún cutting off the northern provinces of Gipuzkoa, Biscay, Santander, and Asturias from their source of arms and support in France.

Significance

The Battle of Irún was the decisive engagement of the Campaign of Gipuzkoa and a strategic turning point preceding the War in the North. By capturing Irún, Nationalist forces under Alfonso Beorlegui severed the northern Republican-held provinces — Gipuzkoa, Biscay, Santander, and Asturias — from their supply lines and material support through France. This isolation transformed the northern zone into an enclave cut off from external reinforcement, fundamentally compromising the Republican position there and setting the conditions for the subsequent Nationalist campaign to reduce the north. Republican forces under Antonio Ortega were unable to hold the city despite comparable numbers, with Emilio Mola and Rafael García Valiño also among the Nationalist commanders directing the operation.
