Significance

The Battle of Idstedt, fought on 25 July 1850 near the village of Idstedt in what is today Schleswig-Holstein, was a Danish victory in the First Schleswig War. The Danish force of 37,000, commanded by Gerhard Christoph von Krogh and Friderich Adolph Schleppegrell, defeated a Schleswig-Holstein army of 26,800 under Karl Wilhelm von Willisen. Combined casualties exceeded 6,400, making it one of the costlier engagements of the conflict. The Danish success reinforced their position in the war against the Schleswig-Holstein uprising and kept the duchies under pressure as the conflict moved toward its conclusion.
