Battle of Gonzales

Significance

The Battle of Gonzales was the opening military engagement of the Texas Revolution. Its immediate cause was a Mexican Army detachment, under Francisco de Castañeda, sent to recover a cannon that had been loaned to the Gonzales colonists in 1831 for defense against Comanche raids. Colonel Domingo de Ugartechea, commanding Mexican forces in Texas, judged the weapon a liability amid the broader unrest spreading through Mexican states in 1835 and demanded its return. The Texian settlers refused. The confrontation that followed marked the point at which political tensions between Anglo colonists and Mexican authorities crossed into armed conflict, transforming a dispute over a single piece of artillery into the opening shot of a separatist war. As the first organized resistance by Texian militia against Mexican regulars, the engagement signaled that the colonial population of Texas was prepared to contest Mexican authority by force, setting the trajectory for the wider revolution that would culminate in Texas independence.
