Battle of Concepción

Significance

The Battle of Concepción, fought on October 28, 1835, stands as the first major engagement of the Texas Revolution, according to historian J. R. Edmondson. The 30-minute clash between Mexican forces under Colonel Domingo Ugartechea and Texian patriots led by James Bowie and James Fannin established early military contact between the opposing sides in the opening phase of the revolution. Occurring at Mission Concepción, just 2 miles south of San Antonio, the engagement placed Texian forces in close proximity to one of the conflict's central strategic objectives — San Antonio itself — signaling that the revolution had moved beyond political grievance into direct armed confrontation.
