Battle of Fleurus

Significance

The Battle of Fleurus on June 26, 1794 was fought between French Republican forces under Jean-Baptiste Jourdan and Jean-Baptiste Kléber, numbering approximately 70,000, against a Habsburg force of around 45,000 commanded by the Prince of Coburg and the Prince of Orange. It stands as one of four engagements fought near the Belgian town of Fleurus across different eras, the others occurring in 1622, 1690, and the Napoleonic period. Fleurus in 1794 was part of the broader War of the First Coalition, in which Revolutionary France contended with a coalition of European powers seeking to contain the spread of revolutionary ideology. Both sides sustained roughly 5,000 casualties. The political commissar Louis Antoine de Saint-Just was also present on the French side, reflecting the Republic's practice of attaching civilian representatives to armies during this period.
