Battle of Erbil

Significance

The Battle of Erbil on August 31, 1996 was a major engagement of the Iraqi Kurdish Civil War, the mid-1990s conflict fought primarily between the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan. The KDP, commanded by Massoud Barzani, fielded a force of approximately 25,000 against the PUK's 13,500. Casualties in the range of 5,000 to 8,000 — figures that align with the total toll attributed to the entire civil war — indicate this engagement was among the most consequential of the conflict. The battle reflected the broader character of the war, in which rival Kurdish factions drew in outside actors including Kurdish groups from Iran and Turkey as well as Iranian, Iraqi, Turkish, and American forces, turning an intra-Kurdish struggle into a regionally entangled conflict.
