The Battle of Erbil on August 31, 1996 was a major engagement of the Iraqi Kurdish Civil War, the mid-1990s conflict fought primarily between the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan. The KDP, commanded by Massoud Barzani, fielded a force of approximately 25,000 against the PUK's 13,500. Casualties in the range of 5,000 to 8,000 — figures that align with the total toll attributed to the entire civil war — indicate this engagement was among the most consequential of the conflict.
