The Battle of Erbil on August 31, 1996 was a major engagement of the Iraqi Kurdish Civil War, the mid-1990s conflict fought primarily between the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan. The KDP, commanded by Massoud Barzani, fielded a force of approximately 25,000 against the PUK's 13,500.
