Significance

The Battle of Dong-Yin, fought on 1 May 1965 near Dongyin island in Fukien Province, was a naval engagement between the Republic of China Navy and the People's Liberation Army Navy. It occurred in the context of the unresolved Chinese Civil War, in which the ROC government on Taiwan and the PRC on the mainland continued to contest sovereignty and conducted sporadic military operations along the island chain held by the ROC. Both sides subsequently claimed victory, leaving the battle's operational outcome contested. As with similar engagements during this period, the action reflected the ongoing low-intensity naval confrontation that characterized the post-1949 phase of the conflict, in which neither side had achieved a decisive resolution.
