Significance

The Battle of Điện Biên Phủ, fought between 13 March and 7 May 1954, resulted in a decisive defeat of French Union forces by the Viet Minh in the First Indochina War. French Union strength stood at approximately 10,800 against a Viet Minh force of roughly 49,500. French casualties ranged between 1,142 and 2,293; Viet Minh losses reached approximately 8,000. The defeat effectively ended French military ambitions in Indochina and brought the First Indochina War to a close, leading to the 1954 Geneva Accords that partitioned Vietnam. It stands as one of the few instances in the twentieth century where a colonial power suffered a set-piece battlefield defeat at the hands of an independence movement, carrying lasting consequences for both French strategic policy and the subsequent trajectory of the conflict in Vietnam.
