Battle of Am Zoer

Overview

The Battle of Am Zoer occurred on June 18, 2008 when the Chadian army caught up with a rebel column that had been advancing towards the capital, N'Djamena. Sudanese forces were reported to have attacked Chadian positions on the border in previous days and the rebels had been seen passing through several eastern villages. The Chadian army engaged the rebels near the town of Am Zoer and routed them killing over 150 and capturing 20. Dozens of military vehicles were also recovered and three government soldiers died.

Significance

The Battle of Am Zoer marked a significant government military success during the Chad–Sudan Conflict, interrupting a rebel advance toward the capital, N'Djamena. A column led by UFDD commanders Mahamat Nouri, Aboud Mackaye, and Timane Erdimi had been moving through eastern villages, while Sudanese forces were reported to have been attacking Chadian border positions in preceding days. The Chadian army under Idriss Déby Itno intercepted and routed the column at Am Zoer, killing over 150 Alliance nationale fighters, capturing 20, and recovering dozens of military vehicles at a cost of three government soldiers. The scale of rebel losses and the seizure of vehicles materially degraded the rebel force's capacity to sustain its push westward.
