Battle of Am Dam

The Battle of Am Dam took place in and around the eastern Chadian town of Am Dam on May 7 and May 8, 2009 when Chadian Army forces attacked a column of advancing Union of Forces for the Resistance (UFR) rebels.

Significance

The Battle of Am Dam marked a significant government military response to a rebel advance deep into eastern Chad. The engagement pitted Chadian Army forces, including a command structure that extended to President Idriss Déby Itno himself, against a UFR column of approximately 400 fighters. The UFR, led by Timan Erdimi and Hamouda Beki, represented one of the principal armed opposition groupings active during the Chad–Sudan conflict, and its push toward Am Dam reflected the sustained capacity of Sudan-backed rebel coalitions to project force inside Chadian territory. The government's decision to intercept the column rather than cede ground indicated the strategic sensitivity of the eastern corridor during this phase of the conflict.
