LOADING MAP TELEMETRY…

Overview

The Battle of Adré took place in Adré, Chad on 18 December 2005. The battle began when the Chadian rebel groups Rally for Democracy and Liberty (RDL) and Platform for Change, Unity, and Democracy (SCUD), allegedly backed by the government of Sudan, attacked the garrison in this city. However, Chadian loyalists, who had been forewarned by military intelligence of the attack, easily repulsed the attackers. Either seventy, one hundred, or three hundred rebels were killed, depending on reports. Governmental losses are unknown, but they lost at least one Russian-made helicopter in a collision with electric wires during the fighting, while another Mil Mi-17 helicopter was heavily damaged by rebel fire which killed at least one crew member.

Significance

The Battle of Adré was an early armed engagement in the Chad–Sudan conflict, in which Chadian rebel groups RDL and SCUD, allegedly backed by Khartoum, moved against a government garrison at Adré. The attack failed: Chadian loyalists had received advance warning from military intelligence and repulsed the assault, inflicting casualties on the rebel force estimated at between seventy and three hundred killed depending on the source. The outcome demonstrated that rebel operations against fortified government positions could be blunted when intelligence gave defenders time to prepare. At the same time, the government's losses — including at least one Russian-made helicopter lost to a collision with electric wires and a second Mil Mi-17 heavily damaged by rebel fire with at least one crew member killed — indicated that even a repulsed attack carried real costs. The battle reinforced the pattern of Sudan-backed proxy pressure on eastern Chad that defined the early phase of the conflict.

Tactics

Chadian rebel groups RDL and SCUD launched an attack on the government at Adré. Chadian loyalists, forewarned by military intelligence, were prepared for the assault and repulsed it. Government forces deployed helicopter assets during the fighting; one helicopter was lost in a collision with electric wires and another was heavily damaged by rebel fire.
