The 2022 Chinese military exercises around Taiwan were a series of large-scale live-fire military exercises that lasted from 4–11 August 2022 by the People's Republic of China (PRC) that encircled the island Taiwan, ruled independently by the government of the Republic of China (ROC). The exercises started in response to then-United States Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan.

Significance
The August 2022 PLA exercises marked a significant escalation in cross-strait tensions, constituting one of the most extensive shows of military force around Taiwan in decades. Conducted in direct response to U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, the exercises demonstrated the PRC's willingness to use large-scale military signaling as a political instrument against both Taipei and Washington. The encirclement of the island by naval vessels, combined with air sorties and ballistic missile launches, established a precedent for the geographic scope and combined-arms character of potential future PLA operations against Taiwan. Within the longer context of the unresolved Chinese Civil War and the competing claims of the PRC and ROC, the exercises underscored that the political settlement of 1949 remains contested and that external diplomatic engagement with Taiwan carries direct military consequences.
