BATTLE // March 1, 1940

1939–1940 Winter Offensive

Overview

The 1939–1940 Winter Offensive was a major engagement between the National Revolutionary Army and Imperial Japanese Army during the Second Sino-Japanese War. It constitutes the first major counter-offensive on multiple fronts of Chinese forces in the war. Although it failed to achieve its original objectives, later studies have shown that it came as a blow to the Japanese forces. The Japanese military command had not expected the Chinese to be able to launch an offensive operation at such a large scale.

Significance

The 1939–1940 Winter Offensive was the first major counter-offensive launched by Chinese forces across multiple fronts in the Second Sino-Japanese War. Fielding over 1.4 million troops against an Imperial Japanese force of approximately 850,000, the National Revolutionary Army failed to achieve its original objectives. Despite that operational shortfall, the offensive inflicted an estimated 20,000 Japanese casualties against Chinese losses of roughly 64,000, and later analysis indicates it dealt a meaningful blow to Japanese forces. Critically, Japanese military command had not anticipated that Chinese forces retained the capacity to mount a coordinated offensive at such scale, meaning the operation carried strategic weight beyond its tactical results — it demonstrated that the National Revolutionary Army could still seize the initiative, complicating Japanese assumptions about Chinese exhaustion after two years of war.
