- Battle of the Boyne
July 11, 1690
The Battle of the Boyne, fought across the River Boyne near Drogheda in 1690, was a decisive engagement between the forces of the deposed James II and those of William III, who along with Queen Mary II had acceded to the Crowns of England, Scotland and Ireland in 1689. William's Williamite army of 36,000 faced a Jacobite force of approximately 23,500, inflicting around 1,500 casualties on the Jacobite side. The outcome turned the tide against James's attempt to reclaim the crowns, effectively ending any realistic prospect of a Jacobite restoration through military means in Ireland. Beyond its immediate operational consequences, the battle aided in ensuring the continued Protestant ascendancy in Ireland, cementing the constitutional and religious settlement that had brought William and Mary to power. Within the broader arc of the Williamite War in Ireland, the Boyne stands as the pivotal confrontation after which James's campaign to regain his thrones effectively collapsed.
