Schmalkaldic War

The Battle of Mühlberg was the decisive engagement of the Schmalkaldic War, resulting in a comprehensive victory for the Catholic imperial forces of Charles V over the Lutheran Schmalkaldic League. The League's principal commanders, Elector John Frederick I of Saxony and Landgrave Philip I of Hesse, led a force of approximately 6,000 against an imperial army of roughly 13,000. The League suffered approximately 8,000 casualties — a figure exceeding its own stated force size, indicating the scale of the collapse. The defeat effectively destroyed the Schmalkaldic League as a military force and removed the leading Protestant princes of the Holy Roman Empire from the field. As the organizing military alliance of Lutheran princes, the League's destruction left the Protestant cause without a coordinated armed structure to resist imperial religious and political authority, at least in the immediate aftermath of the war.
