Ottoman–Portuguese confrontations

The Siege of Diu in 1531 brought Ottoman and Portuguese forces into direct confrontation at a strategically contested position in the Indian Ocean theater. The engagement involved a substantial Ottoman force under Khoja Zufar and Mustafa Bayram facing a significantly larger Portuguese force commanded by Nuno da Cunha, whose fleet and army represented the Estado da India's effort to project and consolidate Iberian power along the western Indian littoral. Diu's position as a major commercial and maritime hub made its control a central objective in the broader Ottoman–Portuguese rivalry over Indian Ocean trade routes and regional influence. The confrontation was one of several episodes in the extended series of Ottoman–Portuguese clashes spanning from 1538 to 1718, in which the two empires competed for dominance over the sea lanes connecting the Red Sea and Persian Gulf to South and Southeast Asian markets.
