Ethiopian–Adal War

The Battle of Wofla was a decisive engagement in the Ethiopian–Adal War, fought near Lake Ashenge between the Portuguese expeditionary force under Cristóvão da Gama and the Adal forces of Imam Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi. Ahmad's army, reinforced with superior numbers and firearms, defeated the Portuguese and forced them to abandon their fortified encampment along with their weapons. The flight of Queen Seble Wongel and her retinue alongside the Portuguese underscored the breadth of the collapse: the engagement dislodged not only the European auxiliary force but also the Ethiopian royal presence sheltering with it. The loss of Portuguese weapons was a material blow to the anti-Adal alliance at a critical juncture of the war, leaving the surviving Portuguese in a severely weakened position within the broader conflict between the Adal Sultanate and the Christian Ethiopian kingdom.
