Albigensian Crusade

The Battle of Muret, fought near Muret some 25 km south of Toulouse, stands as the last major pitched battle of the Albigensian Crusade. Its outcome was stark in terms of the forces involved: Simon de Montfort the Elder's force, estimated at between 1,000 and 1,700 men, defeated a combined army drawn from the Crown of Aragon and allied southern lords numbering around 10,000, led by King Peter II of Aragon alongside Count Raymond VI of Toulouse and Count Raymond-Roger of Foix. The defeat eliminated the most significant external military counterweight to the crusading effort in the south. Peter II, as king of Aragon and suzerain of several Occitan lords, had represented the principal hope of the southern coalition for intervention by a powerful crowned monarch with both political legitimacy and military resources. His defeat at Muret broke that coalition and left the southern lords without a comparable ally, effectively deciding the military phase of the crusade in favor of the French crusaders under Montfort. The battle's place among the most notable pitched engagements of the medieval period rests substantially on the disparity between the two forces and the decisiveness of the result.
