Western Libya campaign

Overview

The Western Libya campaign was a military campaign initiated on 4 April 2019 by the Operation Flood of Dignity of the Libyan National Army (LNA), which represents the Libyan House of Representatives, to capture the western region of Libya and eventually the capital Tripoli held by the United Nations Security Council-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA). The GNA regained control over all of Tripoli in June 2020 and the LNA forces withdrew from the capital, after fourteen months of fighting.

Significance

The Western Libya campaign opened on 4 April 2019 when the Libyan National Army, aligned with the House of Representatives, launched Operation Flood of Dignity to seize western Libya and the capital Tripoli from the UN-recognised Government of National Accord. The offensive represented the most direct military challenge to the GNA's legitimacy and territorial control during the 2014–2020 civil war, committing LNA forces estimated between 3,000 and 30,000 against a GNA force of approximately 5,000. After fourteen months of fighting, the GNA regained full control of Tripoli in June 2020 and LNA forces withdrew, marking a significant reversal for Haftar's campaign and consolidating the internationally recognised government's hold on the capital, though without resolving the broader political division between Tripoli and the eastern-based House of Representatives.
