LOADING MAP TELEMETRY…

Overview

The Walcheren Campaign was an unsuccessful British expedition to the Kingdom of Holland in 1809 intended to open another front in the Austrian Empire's struggle with France during the War of the Fifth Coalition. John Pitt, 2nd Earl of Chatham, the commander of the expedition, was ordered to capture the towns of Flushing (Vlissingen) and Antwerp and thus enable British ships to safely traverse the Scheldt River.

Significance

The Walcheren Campaign was a British expeditionary effort intended to relieve pressure on Austria by opening a second front against France in the Kingdom of Holland during the War of the Fifth Coalition. The expedition's objectives — capturing Flushing and Antwerp and securing British naval access to the Scheldt River — were not achieved. With Austria's struggle against France already faltering, the campaign's failure meant Britain could not translate its maritime strength into meaningful continental leverage at a critical moment. The British force of roughly 39,000–40,000 troops substantially outnumbered the approximately 19,000 French defenders, yet the expedition did not produce the strategic results intended. British casualties reached over 3,500 while French losses were considerably higher at around 8,000, but the attrition did not translate into territorial or operational gains. The failure reinforced the limits of British power projection onto the European continent without a sustained land campaign.
