Battle context
The Siege of Nicaea was the first major battle of the First Crusade, establishing the military viability of the combined crusader force under leaders including Bohemond of Taranto, Raymond IV of Toulouse, and Godfrey of Bouillon. The city's garrison, under pressure from a crusader force numbering some 30,000, ultimately surrendered not to the crusaders but to the Byzantines, reflecting the complex relationship between the crusading contingents and their Byzantine allies. The outcome secured a key Seljuk-held city and opened the route deeper into Anatolia. It was followed in sequence by the Battle of Dorylaeum and the Siege of Antioch, making Nicaea the opening engagement in a chain of operations that defined the crusade's advance through what is now Turkey.
