Siege of Khost

Significance

The siege of Khost extended across more than eleven years, spanning both the Soviet–Afghan War and the subsequent Afghan civil war, making it one of the longest sustained sieges of that era of conflict. The town's airstrip, with its 3 km runway, held strategic value as a base for Soviet helicopter operations, which underscores why holding or denying Khost was a persistent objective for both government forces and Mujahideen commanders including Gulbuddin Hekmatyar and Jalaluddin Haqqani.
