Significance

The Siege of Homs was a prolonged three-year military confrontation between Syrian government forces and opposition fighters in one of the conflict's major rebel strongholds. Beginning in May 2011, the siege became one of the defining engagements of the Syrian Civil War, lasting until May 2014 and concluding with an opposition withdrawal from the city. The fall of Homs represented a significant shift in government control over a strategically important urban center that had early in the conflict emerged as a focal point of armed resistance. Casualties on both sides were substantial, with opposition losses estimated between 2,000 and 2,200 and government losses recorded at roughly 2,012, reflecting the attritional nature of prolonged urban siege warfare.
