Siege of Halicarnassus

Overview

The siege of Halicarnassus was fought between Alexander the Great and the Achaemenid Persian Empire in 334 BC. Alexander, who had no navy, was constantly being threatened by the Persian navy. It continuously attempted to provoke an engagement with Alexander, who would not oblige them. Eventually, the Persian fleet sailed to Halicarnassus, in order to establish a new defense. Ada of Caria, the former queen of Halicarnassus, had been driven from her throne by her younger brother Pixodarus of Caria. When Pixodarus died, Persian King Darius had appointed Orontobates satrap of Caria, which included Halicarnassus in its jurisdiction. On the arrival of Alexander in 334 BC, Ada, who was in possession of the fortress of Alinda, surrendered the fortress to him.

Significance

The Siege of Halicarnassus brought Alexander into direct confrontation with Achaemenid Persian power on the Aegean coast of Asia Minor, where the Persian fleet had established a defensive base at the city. Because Alexander lacked a navy, the Persian fleet represented a persistent strategic threat he could not neutralize at sea, making the reduction of coastal strongholds a central objective of his early campaign. The political context shaped the siege's approach: Ada of Caria, the former queen displaced by her brother Pixodarus and subsequently by the Persian-appointed satrap Orontobates, surrendered the fortress of Alinda to Alexander on his arrival. This transfer gave Alexander a local foothold and a legitimizing relationship with Carian dynastic authority, complicating Persian control of the region. The engagement at Halicarnassus thus combined naval, political, and territorial dimensions central to Alexander's effort to deny the Persian fleet its bases along the Aegean littoral during the opening phase of the Wars of Alexander the Great.
