Siege of Haarlem

Overview

The siege of Haarlem was an episode of the Eighty Years' War. From 11 December 1572 to 13 July 1573 an army of Philip II of Spain laid bloody siege to the city of Haarlem in the Netherlands, whose loyalties had begun wavering during the previous summer. After the naval battle of Haarlemmermeer and the defeat of a land relief force, the starving city surrendered and the garrison was massacred. The resistance nonetheless was taken as a heroic example by the Orangists at the sieges of Alkmaar and Leiden.

Significance

The Siege of Haarlem, lasting from December 1572 to July 1573, was one of the most costly engagements of the early Eighty Years' War. A Spanish force of 17,000–18,000 under Fadrique Álvarez de Toledo besieged a garrison of roughly 2,550 defenders under Wigbolt Ripperda. The city's fall was secured by two compounding blows to the Dutch cause: a Spanish victory in the naval battle of Haarlemmermeer cut off resupply by water, and a land relief force organized under William the Silent was defeated before it could reach the city. Starved into submission, Haarlem surrendered on 13 July 1573, after which the garrison was massacred. Spanish casualties of approximately 1,700 against Dutch losses of around 2,000 indicate the severity of the fighting. Despite the outcome, the prolonged resistance at Haarlem carried weight beyond the immediate defeat: Orangist forces cited the city's stand as a precedent for continued defiance, and it directly influenced the conduct and morale of subsequent sieges at Alkmaar and Leiden, where Dutch forces held out successfully.
