Battle of Jemmingen

Overview

After the Battle of Heiligerlee, the Dutch rebel leader Louis of Nassau failed to capture the city of Groningen. Louis was driven away by Fernando Álvarez de Toledo, Duke of Alba and defeated at the Battle of Jemmingen on 21 July 1568.

Significance

The Battle of Jemmingen followed directly from Louis of Nassau's failed attempt to take Groningen after his earlier success at Heiligerlee. Driven back by the Duke of Alba, Louis suffered a decisive defeat that effectively destroyed his army, with casualties reported at 7,000 of his approximately 10,000-strong force. The engagement ended the rebel offensive in the north at the outset of the Eighty Years' War, demonstrating the capacity of the Spanish imperial army under Alba to suppress armed resistance in the Low Countries. The near-annihilation of Louis's force removed the Dutch rebels as a serious military threat in the region for the immediate term and reinforced Alba's grip on the northern provinces.
