The Siege of Acre was the opening major engagement of the Third Crusade, pitting a Crusader force of approximately 59,000 against an Ayyubid army of 45,000–50,000 under Saladin. The Crusader side drew together forces under a broad coalition of commanders including Richard I of England, Philip II of France, Guy of Lusignan, and Leopold V of Austria, reflecting the multinational character of the expedition.
