Siege of Acre

Overview

The siege of Acre was the first significant counterattack by Guy of Jerusalem against Saladin, Sultan of Egypt. This pivotal siege formed part of what later became known as the Third Crusade. The siege lasted from August 1189 until July 1191, at which time the city's coastal position meant the attacking Latin forces were unable to fully capture the city and Egyptian forces led by Saladin were unable to fully relieve it, with both sides receiving supplies and resources by sea. It concluded as a key victory for the Crusaders and a serious setback for Saladin's ambition to destroy the Crusader states.

Significance

The Siege of Acre was the opening major engagement of the Third Crusade, pitting a Crusader force of approximately 59,000 against an Ayyubid army of 45,000–50,000 under Saladin. The Crusader side drew together forces under a broad coalition of commanders including Richard I of England, Philip II of France, Guy of Lusignan, and Leopold V of Austria, reflecting the multinational character of the expedition. Crusader casualties of approximately 19,000 against estimated Ayyubid losses of 5,000–10,000 indicate the operation was costly for the besieging force, underscoring the scale of resistance the Ayyubid sultanate was able to mount in defense of the port city. Acre's position as a principal harbor on the Levantine coast made it a strategically critical objective: control of the city was essential to sustaining any prolonged Crusader presence in the Holy Land.
