Second Battle of Kharkov

Overview

The Second Battle of Kharkov or Operation Fredericus was an Axis counter-offensive in the region around Kharkov against the Red Army Izium bridgehead offensive conducted 12–28 May 1942, on the Eastern Front during World War II. Its objective was to eliminate the Izium bridgehead over Seversky Donets or the "Barvenkovo bulge" which was one of the Soviet offensive's staging areas. After a winter counter-offensive that drove German troops away from Moscow but depleted the Red Army's reserves, the Kharkov offensive was a new Soviet attempt to expand upon their strategic initiative, although it failed to secure a significant element of surprise.

Significance

The Second Battle of Kharkov, fought 12–28 May 1942, resulted in a catastrophic Soviet defeat that reversed the momentum the Red Army had gained during its winter counter-offensive near Moscow. The Soviet offensive, intended to expand strategic initiative and press against German positions around Kharkov, instead exposed the Izium bridgehead—the so-called Barvenkovo bulge—to an Axis counter-offensive under Operation Fredericus. German forces under von Bock, Paulus, von Kleist, and Pflugbeil eliminated the bridgehead and inflicted losses of over 277,000 Soviet casualties against German losses estimated at 20,000–30,000, a disparity that severely degraded Soviet operational capacity in the southern sector. The failure to secure meaningful surprise compounded the disaster. The destruction of the Izium bridgehead left Soviet forces in the south dangerously weakened at a critical moment, contributing to the vulnerability that German summer operations would exploit in subsequent months on the Eastern Front.
