Significance
The Battles of Rzhev comprised a series of Red Army offensives fought between January 1942 and March 1943 against Wehrmacht forces holding a salient in the northeast of Smolensk Oblast and the south of Tver Oblast on the Eastern Front. The campaign extended across more than a year and involved Soviet forces numbering over 3.6 million against a German force of approximately 1.6 million. Soviet casualties ranged from roughly 1.16 million to an estimated 2.3 million, against German losses of over 668,000, a disparity that earned the campaign the name 'Rzhev Meat Grinder' among veterans and historians. The battles represent one of the costliest sustained Soviet operational efforts of the war, reflecting the persistent difficulty the Red Army faced in reducing a well-defended German salient even as broader momentum on the Eastern Front began to shift. Senior commanders on both sides, including Zhukov and Konev for the Soviets and Model and von Kluge for Germany, were committed to the theater, underscoring its operational weight within the wider Eastern Front campaign.
