Pancho Villa Expedition

Significance

The Pancho Villa Expedition was a United States Army operation conducted against the paramilitary forces of Francisco 'Pancho' Villa during the Mexican Revolution. Fielding approximately 10,000 troops against a Conventionist force roughly twice that size, the expedition ran from March 1916 to February 1917 and resulted in 169 Villista casualties. Commanded by John J. Pershing under the authority of President Woodrow Wilson, the operation—formally designated the Punitive Expedition—represented a direct cross-border military intervention by the United States into Mexican territory, a significant escalation of American involvement in the revolution. The expedition's conclusion in February 1917 without the capture of Villa illustrated the limits of conventional military pursuit against a dispersed paramilitary force operating on home terrain, and it left the broader conflict within Mexico unresolved.
