Significance
The Ottoman conquest of Adrianople, which occurred sometime in the 1360s, marked a significant territorial advance into Thrace during the Byzantine–Ottoman wars. The city subsequently became the Ottoman capital, a status it held until the fall of Constantinople in 1453. This transfer of the imperial seat from Anatolia to Europe underscored the degree to which the Ottomans had consolidated control over a major urban center in the Balkans, placing their administrative base deep within territory that had previously been within the Byzantine sphere. The fall of Adrianople thus foreshadowed the broader encirclement of Constantinople that would define the final phase of the Byzantine–Ottoman conflict.
