Ostrogozhsk–Rossosh Offensive

Battle context

The Ostrogozhsk–Rossosh offensive targeted the Hungarian 2nd Army and elements of the Italian 8th Army along the Eastern Front, forming part of the broader Voronezh–Kharkov offensive by the Soviet Voronezh Front. The operation inflicted approximately 52,000 casualties on a Hungarian force of around 260,000, against Soviet losses of roughly 4,500, a disparity that effectively shattered the Hungarian 2nd Army as a combat formation. The offensive's success contributed to the progressive dismantling of Axis satellite forces holding the flanks of the Eastern Front following the encirclement at Stalingrad, accelerating the collapse of Axis defensive lines across the Don region and deepening the strategic crisis facing German and allied forces during the winter of 1943.
