Operation Uvda

Overview

Operation Uvda was an operation conducted by the Israel Defense Forces during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War, from 5 March to 10 March 1949. It was the last campaign undertaken by the IDF during the war and its objective was to capture the southern Negev desert, which was claimed by the Kingdom of Jordan to be under Jordanian control in the armistice talks of 1949.

Significance

Operation Uvda, conducted from 5 to 10 March 1949, was the final IDF campaign of the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. Its objective was to secure the southern Negev desert, a territory Jordan claimed as its own during the concurrent armistice negotiations. By moving to establish facts on the ground before those negotiations concluded, Israel sought to resolve the disputed status of the region in its favor. As the last operation of the war, Uvda's outcome directly shaped the territorial boundaries that would be formalized in the armistice agreements, making it a campaign with direct diplomatic as well as military consequences.
